By lucky I don't mean spoiled. I don't mean to they get everything they want. I mean how good are their experiences?
As one of my children cracks open a coconut, tips out the juice and begins to scrape out the coconut flesh to enjoy I realise they're experiencing something lucky. They are unaware of that. All they know is they asked if they could get a coconut, mum said yes and now they're trying one out.
My child doesn't know that when mum was a little girl she never experienced such a thing and most likely would have been told no if she'd asked. Were coconuts even in the supermarket when I was little?
They're not thinking about the thousands of people living in poverty who don't get to eat let alone have their own coconut.
They don't know that their obese friend will never get to experience something like that.
Speaking of this obese friend who is the same age yet 5 times the size of my child, he is unaware that he is missing out on these experiences. He is unaware of how unlucky he is because his family are not taking care of his health, not feeding him right, not teaching him the importance of nutrition.
His mum once told me she doesn't understand why her son is big (she and her family are also on the larger side) because he barely eats. Then one day we all went to FatDonalds together and her children ate, not only larger meals than mine but also 100% more sugar. My children had a cheese burger, fries and water. Hers ate large burgers, larger chips, a thick shake plus a fancy choc chip cookie sundae. I'm pretty sure I know exactly why her son is overweight/obese. Poor love.
I'm not judging. I understand a vast many people don't know much about nutrition or preparing good meals or how to get their children to eat what's given. I understand that overweight parents eat badly and pass those eating habits onto their children who don't know any better.
That's what I mean about my original question. How lucky are your children? Are they getting to experiences new and wonderful things, are you taking
good care of their heath and their teeth, are you teaching them amazing things about
the world and the environment?
